Are You Focusing On The Past Or The Future You?

Earlier this week a young woman, Ada, told me about her
boyfriend. He cheated on her twice in the early weeks of her relationship. But theirs is, allegedly, a ‘good
relationship, and they have ‘put it behind them’. Besides, as a couple they are
well matched, according to her, because they are both ‘quite needy’.

Her comment left me musing. All credit to her for being aware of the reality of the situation. But her conclusion that this makes for a
good relationship is, I fear, misguided.

In an ideal relationship, here will be a fair amount of
mirroring. There will be a good match
of healthy beliefs, values, attitudes and aspirations. Both partners will bring a capacity for
wholeness that will enable them to achieve a certain wholeness within the
relationship.
